About: Hi there! My name is Savanah and I am a local potter. I have been creating pottery for around 3.5 years now, and I love exploring the many forms and techniques of clay. Other than clay, I like to paint, garden, cook, forage for mushrooms, and play my flute. I currently have a day job working in software test development.
What I love to create:My pieces are made from stoneware or porcelain clay and fired to cone 6 oxidation or cone 10 reduction. Historically, I made a lot of geometric sgraffito pots, but lately I've been inspired to experiment more with the pot’s form. I have been throwing pots and altering their shapes in various ways. In addition to modifying the pot's form, I've been creating freehand slip-trailed flowers on my pots, chattering, and experimenting with screen printed underglaze transfers.
My other fun project this summer is creating pots from clay I dug up and refined from my back yard. I also want to pit fire pendants made from my backyard clay and attach them to large pots.
My inspiration? Why I make?My main inspirations are nature and clay in and of itself. I really enjoy clay and how it can be transformed into anything I want it to be, and for its fluidity and beauty. I really enjoy the challenge of creating functional items, such as tea pots and pitchers. I'm inspired by the shape of each unique piece and try to push myself each time to throw a more beautiful pot than before. I don't typically go into a piece knowing how I want to decorate it, but instead I throw a piece and let it tell me how to modify or decorate it.
I also really love how there is always something new to discover and learn about clay and pottery. There are so many different techniques for creating pots and firing them. I’m really looking forward to experimenting with raku and pit firing this summer.
